Who we ARe
Located in Southwestern Illinois, approximately 16 miles from St. Louis, Missouri, Millstadt Ambulance Service covers a diverse region spanning 107 square miles, including both rural and urban areas. Our service area encompasses Millstadt Township and unincorporated portions of Belleville, Hecker, Columbia, Waterloo, Smithton, and Dupo, Illinois. We also provide mutual aid to neighboring departments in Waterloo, Hecker, Smithton, Belleville, Columbia, and Dupo.
Founded in 1980 by a grassroots effort, Millstadt Ambulance Service began as a basic life support (BLS) service. A group of dedicated individuals canvassed door-to-door, petitioning to bring EMS services to their community. For over three decades, we operated as a BLS service until 2013, when both our members and board of directors unanimously voted to upgrade to an advanced life support (ALS) service. In 2018, we further expanded our capabilities by acquiring our current facility at 100 East Laurel Street, Millstadt, Illinois.
Our future goals include upgrading equipment, enhancing the level of care we provide, and investing in educational resources for residents, employees, and neighboring districts. We serve a diverse community that includes rural airports, family-friendly apple orchards, paintball parks, schools, a golf course, assisted living centers, industrial factories, and numerous small businesses and residences. Our team is prepared to respond to a wide variety of emergencies, from urban incidents to wilderness rescues.
The Millstadt Ambulance District has seen remarkable growth, with the population increasing from approximately 6,000 in 2010 to over 12,000 by 2024. This population surge has driven a significant rise in call volume, with an average annual increase of approximately 12.54%. The district's demographic is predominantly White (Non-Hispanic) at 96.3%, with 3.12% identifying as White (Hispanic) and 0.562% as Black or African American (Non-Hispanic). The median age of Millstadt residents is 39, with a balanced distribution across various age groups.
As of September 2024, the Millstadt Ambulance District has responded to over 1,100 calls for service. This represents a substantial increase from 300 calls in 2013, reflecting a 266.7% rise in call volume over the 11-year period. Additionally, the number of calls increased by 37.5% from 2023 to 2024 alone, highlighting the growing demand for emergency medical services as the district continues to expand rapidly.
Our staff consists of 20 to 30 professionals, including drivers, EMTs, paramedics, Critical Care Paramedics, and Pre-Hospital Registered Nurses. Employees are permitted to respond from their homes, provided they live within a specified radius of the EMS base. We operate two units: M3926, a fully ALS-capable paramedic unit, and M3925, a BLS unit that can be upgraded to ALS as needed.
At Millstadt Ambulance Service, our mission is to provide the highest level of emergency medical care to the communities we serve, while continuing to evolve and meet the growing needs of our region.
